Excursion to Bhimbetka Rock Shelters

Background: The rock-paintings at Bhimbetka are among the earliest expressions of the human creative spirit preserved in India. Dating from the Mesolithic period, they form an important historic resource about the ancient inhabitants of this land.

What makes Bhimbetka special is not only the antiquity of its art, or the fact that it is set in its own natural environment in a pristine state. Bhimbetka is unique because it shows both continuity and change – the story of the human spirit, as it were – from the Mesolithic to the Medieval period. The rock paintings span a long period of human inhabitation of the area, and many of the caves show paintings in multiple layers, marking a continuous sequence of cultures. It is even more delightful to observe that elements of the hunting and gathering economy so richly illustrated in the rock paintings, still survive in the adivasi (aboriginal) cultures of Madhya Pradesh. In 2003, Bhimbetka was included among the UNESCO World Heritage sites.

About this tour: This is a 6 hour excursion from Bhopal, departing your hotel at 9 am and returning by 3 p.m. We will visit the rock shelters at Bhimbetka and also make a short stop at the Bhojeshwar temple at Bhojpur.

At Bhimbetka, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has implemented an excellent walkway, with well-defined path and markings. Although in some places the shelters have been cordoned off to prevent accidental damage, the paintings are clearly visible. With the help of our experienced guides, you will find it easy to identify and understand the paintings. While there are over 700 rock shelters in the area, our tour focuses on the ones which the ASI has opened to the public. It includes the major highlights of Bhimbetka such as the Auditorium Rock Shelter, Zoo Rock and Boar Rock.

At Bhojpur, we will make a quick visit to the partially built 11th century Bhojeshwar temple, dedicated to Shiva. The temple is attributed to the Paramara king Bhoja, a widely revered scholar and a patron of the arts. Although Bhoja was said to be a prolific builder of temples, the Bhojeshwar temple is the only surviving one which can be ascribed to him with certainty. The ASI has desginated it as a monument of national importance.
